In Switzerland, the start of the official holiday season is on December 6th, Saint Nicholas Day, the patron of children.
All through December, bakeries and homes alike are filled with the wonderful fragrances of "Guetzli" the baking of Christmas cookies. Most regions have their own specialties, but nowadays they can be found throughout Switzerland.
